Make sure your estate plan includes your digital assets

Estate planning is something that everyone in Lee County should do. However, everyone should eat healthy and exercise as well, but that doesn’t mean everyone does it. Just like eating right, estate planning is often ignored. Even if you do have an estate plan in place, people’s life situations are always changing, which means it’s always a good idea to review your estate plan.

Although many people do have estate plans in place to help determine the distribution of their assets when they die, a lot of people still don’t have a plan for their digital identity. As social media continues to gain a larger presence in people’s lives their virtual identity continues to grow as well. The problem is that all of those photos, e-mails, and other accounts can be tied up when a person dies, even if that person has left passwords and other login info with his or her family members.

Digital asset planning is becoming more important in estate planning and it’s not just social media accounts. If a person owns any kind of online stock, or does all of his or her banking online, but fails to include those things in his or her estate plan, those assets could be lost for good.

Determining how you distribute your assets after you die is not necessarily easy, but it’s something everyone should do. That plan should also include your digital assets. If you are in need of help with your estate plan, then you might want to meet with an experienced estate-planning attorney to get that help.
