When a person reaches a point in life that he or she is no longer able to care for him or herself or make important decisions, it’s often left up to a family member to be in charge of that person. Sometimes, a certain family member will be awarded a guardianship over the person who has become unable to care for him or herself. However, sometimes, those decisions can be the source of controversy between different families members with a vested interest.
The ongoing battle over the care of former radio personality Casey Kasam has taken another twist. According to reports, Mr. Kasam’s wife, Jean Kasam has at least temporarily lost control of her power to make medical decisions regarding her husband’s care. The court order also gave Mr. Kasam’s daughter, Kerri Kasam the power to decide if her father is receiving sufficient medical care.
According to reports, Jean Kasam insists that her husband continues to be treated well and that he is receiving the best care possible. Jean Kasam also claims that she is not going to allow any false accusations break her family apart. However, according to court papers, Jean Kasam must comply with the court order and she must allow Kerri Kasam to see her father.
This is obviously a situation that brings out a lot of emotions for all of the parties involved. No one wants to end up in a position where he or she is unable to care for him or herself. However, unexpected things happen in life and people don’t always have control of how life turns out. If you haven’t planned your estate, including considering a guardianship should you become disabled, then now may be a good time to meet with an estate-planning attorney.
